Meghalaya: Mob Assaults Suspected Thieves, 2 Arrested

A violent mob assault on three suspected thieves in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has led to the arrest of two individuals. According to the East Khasi Hills police, the incident occurred on August 23 at 11 Mer, Mylliem, where members of the public had apprehended the three suspects. Police received information about the incident at around 5:40 am and upon arrival, found the mob assaulting the three individuals.

Despite police intervention, the mob continued to assault the suspects and allegedly manhandled officers and staff. The three suspects, identified as Banshan Kurbah, 25, Albert Marbaniang, 26, and Ibalabet Kharmawlong, 27, were rescued and taken to Pomlum PHC for medical examination before being brought to Mawngap Police Station for safe custody. A Maruti car allegedly used by the suspects was also seized and kept at the police station.

However, as no complaint had been received against the three suspects, they were subsequently released. The police have registered a suo motu case in connection with the incident and the alleged assault, leading to the arrest of two individuals, Arningson Kharkongor and Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor, who are accused of leading the mob attack. Both individuals have been produced before the court, and further investigation is underway.

The police have appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and to immediately inform the police in such cases.
