The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) submitted memorandums to all 36 elected representatives from the Khasi Hills on Friday, urging them to raise the union’s five demands before the state government ahead of the autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which begins on August 24.
The union also plans to submit memorandums to the 24 MLAs from the Garo Hills as part of its efforts to press its demands. Members of the union’s respective units and circles under the constituencies represented by the MLAs participated in the submission of the memorandums.
According to the KSU, elected representatives have a responsibility to raise issues concerning employment opportunities and the problems faced by the Khasi community. The union emphasized that it would continue its agitation until the state government fully implements its demands.
As part of its ongoing agitation, the KSU has planned a sit-in demonstration at the statue of U Kiang Nangbah opposite Shillong Civil Hospital on August 24 from 11 am. Additionally, the union will organize sit-in demonstrations across seven districts of the Khasi Hills on August 25.
However, the KSU has decided not to organize any agitation programme on August 22 to avoid inconveniencing candidates appearing for the Lower Division Assistant (LDA) examination conducted by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC). The union stated that this decision was taken to ensure that candidates are not affected by its programmes.
