In a groundbreaking achievement, the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, has successfully performed a rare robotic pylorus preserving Whipple procedure on an eight-year-old child. This milestone in the field of paediatric robotic surgery demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical care to its patients. The child, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bile ducts, underwent preoperative chemotherapy before the surgery.
The robotic platform used in the procedure provided excellent 3D vision and enabled precise dissection with delicate reconstruction, allowing the surgical team to remove the entire tumour while preserving the pylorus, a part of the stomach. After a two-week recovery, the child will continue with further chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The Paediatric Surgical team at CMC Vellore has established itself as a leader in complex ablative and reconstructive robotic surgeries in the chest and abdomen, regularly performing such procedures.
The use of robotic technology has also made lung-preserving operations possible, allowing the hospital to continue serving children across the country with advanced reconstructive minimally invasive procedures.
