In a major operation, the Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps of the Army’s Eastern Command, seized narcotics worth over Rs 27 crore in Manipur on Friday. Six individuals were apprehended in connection with the seizure, which was conducted with the assistance of the Manipur Police and other agencies.
The raid resulted in the recovery of 90,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 27 crore and 48 grams of heroin worth Rs 28.80 lakh. The successful operation was carried out after intercepting a boat carrying contraband at Jiribam, Manipur, and a swift pursuit of the suspects. The seizure is a significant blow to narcotics trafficking networks and reaffirms the commitment of the security forces towards a safer and drug-free region.
The proliferation of Yaba has become a major problem in the country, with the drug being smuggled across the porous border and used by addicts in the northeastern states, as well as being transported to other parts of the country. Security agencies have also uncovered a connection between narcotics trafficking and terrorism, highlighting the need for continued efforts to combat the issue.
Yaba, a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, is a highly addictive and powerful stimulant that can have deadly consequences. Overdoses can cause hyperthermia, convulsions, and death, while users may also experience episodes of violent behavior, paranoia, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. The seizure is a major success in the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat plan, aimed at making India a drug-free country.
The Assam Rifles, a paramilitary unit operating under the Army, is entrusted with guarding India’s border with Myanmar and carrying out counter-insurgency operations. The troops regularly conduct intelligence-based operations to intercept consignments of narcotics and weapons, playing a crucial role in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
