Mizoram Approves Local Fruit Beer Manufacturers

The Mizoram government has given the green light to 11 applicants to manufacture local fruit beer in the state, following a thorough review of applications received under the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2025. This development comes after a meeting of the Selection Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, where applications for licences to manufacture local fruit beer and establish wineries were considered.

A total of 99 applications were received, with 96 applicants seeking to manufacture local fruit beer and three looking to establish wineries. After conducting interviews with applicants and site inspections where feasible, the committee approved 11 applications for local fruit beer manufacturing, while 13 other applicants were given additional time for further scrutiny.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized that the initiative should prioritize the interests of farmers by creating better opportunities for them to sell locally grown fruits and agricultural produce at remunerative prices. He also stressed the importance of using modern technology in fruit processing and adhering strictly to food safety standards, with a focus on public health.

The Selection Committee assessed applicants based on several criteria, including compliance with food safety requirements, availability of suitable manufacturing equipment, technical manpower, financial capacity, and the ability to use fruits and agricultural produce grown in Mizoram. The government has proposed training for selected applicants, stronger linkages between manufacturers and farmers, and inter-visits among selected units to promote knowledge-sharing and the exchange of best practices.

The committee recommended developing a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for licence holders. Additionally, the government has decided to extend the application period to allow more prospective applicants to apply. The Selection Committee comprises representatives from various departments, including Commerce & Industries, Excise & Narcotics, Horticulture, and Food & Drugs Administration, as well as representatives from Mizoram University and individual experts with specialized knowledge in the field.
