A militant attack was launched on an Assam Rifles post in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district early Friday morning, just a day before Independence Day celebrations. The 21 Assam Rifles post at Tikhak Taipi village near Longvi was targeted at around 3 am, with reports indicating that the attack involved three to four explosions followed by a prolonged period of heavy gunfire lasting over 45 minutes.
According to sources, six empty shell casings were later recovered from the side from which the firing was reported. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been officially confirmed so far, and further details are awaited from the authorities. The attack occurred in Longvi, a remote border village in the Jairampur-Nampong area of Changlang district, close to the India-Myanmar border.
Suspected militants are believed to have opened indiscriminate fire on the Assam Rifles post from across the border, prompting security personnel to retaliate with heavy fire. The situation in the locality is reportedly very tense, with speculation suggesting that the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) and NSCN(K-YA) might be behind the attack. Both militant outfits had earlier called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations.
Assam Rifles posts in the area have previously been targeted by militant groups operating along the region. In response to the incident, a search operation is underway to track down the suspected attackers, and security forces have intensified surveillance in and around the camp. Further details are awaited.
