A landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla area has resulted in the deaths of seven people and injured seven others. The incident occurred at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West, at around 3:48 am on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The soil and debris from the hillside collapsed onto two to three houses, resulting in loss of life and property damage.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site to inspect the rescue operations and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 in assistance for each injured person. The Mayor met the affected families, offered her condolences, and directed all the agencies present at the site to expedite the relief and rescue operation.
Rescue efforts are underway, with teams of the fire brigade, police, NDRF, ambulance service, and civic ward staff deployed at the site. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with 50 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation personnel continued rescue efforts, with two people trapped under the debris. The site of the incident and the route leading to it are extremely narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time.
The BMC reported this as a level-II incident and warned residents about the risks of landslides or rockfalls in the area. Notices were issued as part of pre-monsoon precautionary measures, and awareness campaigns were conducted in this regard. The municipal administration had also warned residents about the risks at Hill No. 3, Ashok Nagar, Kurla.
Among those dead are four members of a family, including two children, one female, and a male. They have been taken to Rathod Medical, Kurla West. Two of the deceased, identified as Sohel Ansari (18) and Mohamad Ansari (14), were sent to Rajawadi Hospital.
The incident highlights the risks of landslides and rockfalls in the area, and the need for residents to be aware of the dangers and take necessary precautions.
