In a move to maintain the aesthetic appeal of its campuses, Kerala University has removed flags, banners, and boards from its headquarters and Karyavattom campus. The decision was made after Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal directed student and employee organisations to take down the publicity materials within 24 hours.
The Registrar was instructed to oversee the removal process at the university’s expense if the organisations failed to comply within the stipulated time. However, the organisations themselves took down the banners and boards, avoiding the need for university intervention. The removal process was carried out in the presence of police personnel at the Karyavattom campus.
The university has also introduced new guidelines for the installation of boards and banners on its campuses. The Vice-Chancellor has prohibited the installation of such items in a manner that obscures the university’s heritage structures and important buildings. Additionally, no boards or banners will be allowed within 200 metres of the university’s entrance gates.
To accommodate the needs of student, teaching, and non-teaching organisations, the university has decided to arrange special facilities on its campuses for displaying their boards. This move aims to strike a balance between maintaining the university’s aesthetic appeal and providing a platform for organisations to showcase their activities.
