Manipur CM urges public to avoid bandhs, blockades

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has appealed to the public to refrain from bandhs, blockades, and all forms of agitation, highlighting their negative impact on daily life and the state’s economy. He emphasized that such agitations particularly affect daily wage earners. The Chief Minister made this appeal while addressing a two-day Consultative Meeting cum Seminar on the Demographic Profile of Manipur at the Classic Grande in Imphal.

The event was jointly organized by the Home Department, Government of Manipur, and the Manipur State Population Commission. Khemchand Singh stated that ongoing bandhs, blockades, and other forms of agitation along highways have severely affected the economy of both the state and the country. He also mentioned that the ongoing blockade has caused serious problems for truck drivers who are stranded on national highways while transporting essential goods to the state.

The Chief Minister assured that the state government is always ready to support any steps and actions that benefit the general public. He expressed confidence in the outcome of the discussions, believing that the suggestions and resolutions adopted by experts will be for the welfare of the people. Khemchand Singh stressed that all recommendations must be within the provisions of the Constitution of India.

Khemchand Singh also appealed to the public not to resort to any kind of agitation that may disrupt the normal daily activities of citizens. Meanwhile, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam informed the gathering that the Manipur government has already informed the Central Government of its willingness to conduct an NRC exercise in the state under the constitutional and legal framework.

Konthoujam stated that a High-Level Committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has been constituted to study demographic changes in the country. He emphasized the need for people to come together for the larger interest of the public and work to resolve issues faced by the indigenous people of the state, despite any political or ideological differences.

The inaugural function was attended by various officials, CSO leaders, community leaders, women leaders, intellectuals, academicians, and others.
