Assam down town University, UPES sign MoU for AI, disaster resilience research

Assam down town University (AdtU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UPES, Dehradun, to collaborate on research, innovation, and skill development in emerging technologies, with a focus on addressing the developmental needs of Northeast India. The agreement was signed by Joutishman Dutta, Vice President and Managing Trustee of Assam down town University, and Dr Sunil Rai, Vice Chancellor of UPES, in the presence of officials from both institutions. Representatives from UPES’ School of Health Sciences, School of Advanced Engineering, and School of Computer Science attended the signing ceremony, while Assam down town University officials, including faculty members from the Faculty of Computer Technology and the university’s PhD Cell, joined the event virtually.

Delegates from NECTAR, UPES, and AdtU were also present. The partnership aims to promote collaborative research and innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, disaster resilience, clean energy, hydrogen technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), critical minerals, geographic information systems (GIS), digital health, smart agriculture, rural technologies, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation. The two institutions also plan to introduce joint PhD programmes, undertake collaborative research projects, facilitate faculty and student exchanges, support startups and incubation initiatives, encourage technology transfer and commercialisation, and organise capacity-building and skill development programmes.

As part of the collaboration, UPES will contribute expertise in advanced technologies, including AI-powered flood prediction and early warning systems, GIS-based disaster monitoring, hydrogen exploration, critical mineral assessment, CCUS technologies, and AI-enabled biomedical devices for the early detection of breast cancer. The partnership is intended to strengthen research, technology development, and entrepreneurship while contributing to sustainable development initiatives across the Northeast.
