A major breakthrough was achieved by the Namsai district police with the arrest of a wanted drug supplier from Changlang district on Tuesday evening. The arrest was made during a naka checking, where 24 grams of suspected heroin were also seized.
The police action was initiated after receiving information about a motorcycle carrying suspected heroin from the Innao-Diyun-Changlang side towards Namsai. A police team led by Namsai SDPO Kengo Dirchi quickly set up a naka near the Piyong Road tri-junction leading to Wagun road, where the motorcycle was intercepted around 6 pm.
The occupants of the motorcycle were identified as Sunil Kumar Chakma (45) and Subash Chakma (40), both residents of Udaipur-I village in Diyun of Changlang district. According to Namsai SP Sangey Thinley, the search of the motorcycle led to the recovery of 24 grams of suspected heroin, along with the motorcycle and other incriminating articles.
The seized heroin was concealed in two plastic soap cases, the SP said. A case has been registered at Namsai police station under Section 21(b) of the NDPS Act, 1985.
The police are now conducting further investigations to identify the source of the contraband and dismantle the entire supply chain involved in the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs, the SP added.
