Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has donated Rs 11 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support relief and rehabilitation efforts for people affected by the devastating floods in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the contribution on Friday, expressing gratitude to Adani for extending support during a time when Assam is battling one of its worst flood situations in recent years.
Sarma said he was heartened to learn that Adani had made an online contribution of Rs 11 crore to strengthen the state’s ongoing relief operations for flood-affected families. The Chief Minister also lauded Adani for his quiet and compassionate approach to philanthropy, saying the industrialist had chosen to make the contribution without seeking public attention.
Apart from the financial assistance, Adani is also mobilising additional resources to support relief operations for thousands of families affected by the floods across the state. Sarma said Adani’s concern for the people of Assam and his willingness to stand by them during a humanitarian crisis reflected his commitment towards the state.
The floods in Assam have resulted in widespread devastation, with thousands of people displaced and extensive damage reported to homes, roads, embankments, agricultural land, and public infrastructure in several districts. The state government has announced a comprehensive financial relief package for families affected by the recent floods, including a six-month moratorium on loan repayments and a collateral-free consumption loan of Rs 10,000 for existing borrowers in the affected districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported that the flood situation has improved, with the number of affected districts coming down to eight. However, over 2.12 lakh people continue to reel under the impact of inundation across these districts, and the cumulative death toll due to this year’s floods has risen to 80.
Relief operations are continuing across the affected areas, with 112 relief camps and relief distribution centres operational. The state government and district administrations are closely monitoring the flood situation, particularly in vulnerable areas, as water levels in several rivers continue to remain high.
