A joint inspection team led by MLA Wanglam Sawin visited the damaged stretch of road near the Khonsa post office on Tuesday, resulting in the decision to temporarily relocate the post office to the old district and sessions court building.
The decision was made in response to the difficulties faced by daily commuters due to the poor condition of the road. According to Sawin, the temporary relocation will facilitate the construction of a diversion road, ultimately restoring smooth traffic movement.
The district administration has issued an evacuation order for residents living within the sinking zone and for the staff of the Khonsa post office, as stated by DC Badonlum Tawsik. The vacant court building will be renovated as soon as possible to accommodate the post office and its staff.
The temporary relocation will enable the construction of an approximately 200-meter diversion road, providing connectivity to various locations including Lazu block, Tutnu block, Kheti, Thinsa, and Lapnan villages, APSTS bus station, 36 Battalion CRPF, 44 Assam Rifles, and Government Higher Secondary School, Khonsa.
PWD EE Taro Jeram stated that the road construction works are expected to be completed within two weeks, pending government approval. Postmaster Natmoi Wangno added that approval from the chief postmaster general is awaited to shift the office, but the Department of Posts has no objection to the relocation once the building is properly renovated and ready for occupation.
