The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, which aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the state by offering financial incentives. The policy was approved on Monday, and it includes a purchase incentive of ₹25,000 for individuals who buy electric vehicles, along with a complete waiver of vehicle registration fees. According to Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Marcuise N.
Marak, the government is also working to provide additional benefits under the state’s vehicle scrapping policy, which was introduced last year. Owners who produce a valid vehicle scrapping certificate will be eligible for further incentives, although the details and quantum of these benefits will be finalized later. The government is aware of concerns over the limited availability of EV charging infrastructure, and it has identified sites for dedicated charging stations.
Charging facilities will be established at multiple locations, and the state is also pursuing the establishment of a vehicle scrapping facility in Meghalaya. In addition to the EV policy, the Cabinet also approved ₹22.37 crore as land compensation for the construction of a transmission line connecting the Mawkhanu Substation. The project will require land acquisition along a 6.5-kilometre stretch.
Furthermore, the Cabinet approved the renaming of the New Shillong Township Development Agency as the New Shillong Development Authority, and extended the tenure of the incumbent Chief Technical Adviser (Generation) in the Power Department.
