Manipur: Tensions Escalate After Goods Seizure, Blockade Imposed

Tensions have escalated in Manipur’s Ukhrul district after goods were seized from commuters at Shangkai village, prompting Kuki groups to impose a counter economic blockade on National Highway 202. The incident occurred on Monday when escorted vehicles, including passenger vehicles and private cars, were forcibly stopped by womenfolk at Shangkai village near Litan Police Station.

According to sources, the security forces, including Manipur police, were present at the scene but no official statement has been released. The Kuki CSO Working Committee (WCKCSOs)-Ukhrul has enforced the blockade, effective from midnight of 26 July 2026, following consultations with Kuki-Zo civil society organisations of Ukhrul and Kangpokpi.

The WCKCSOs stated that the decision was made after months of obstruction of essential commodities, despite submitting memoranda and holding meetings with the government. The committee expressed regret for the inconvenience caused but maintained that the responsibility for the situation rests solely with the authorities.

During the blockade, medical emergencies, passenger vehicles, travellers proceeding to catch flights, and Security Forces will be allowed after due inspection to ensure that no goods are transported. All government and private institutions within the jurisdiction of the 14 Kuki-Zo villages will also remain closed until further notice.

The WCKCSOs urged all Kuki-Zo blockade enforcers to remain vigilant and come fully prepared, citing past experiences where the Governments of Manipur and India have invoked the full might of the State against Kuki-Zo people demanding justice through democratic means.

The blockade will remain in force until the Government ensures the free movement of essential commodities through concrete action, not mere assurances. The situation has raised concerns about the impact on the local population and the potential for further escalation of tensions in the region.
