A viral video showing a passenger performing puja inside an AC train coach with a lit oil lamp has raised concerns over passenger safety and prompted an investigation by the Indian Railways. The video, which has been circulating on social media, depicts a passenger on the upper berth of an AC train coach with an oil lamp and incense sticks burning, despite fellow passengers warning of the potential risks.
The Indian Railways is currently trying to identify the social media account that originally uploaded the video, as well as the train and the passenger involved. According to a senior railway official, once the account is traced, officials will work to identify the train and the passenger, and take necessary action.
The incident has highlighted concerns over passenger safety, particularly with regards to the carrying of prohibited or offensive goods on trains. Recently, the Ministry of Railways increased the penalty for such offenses, imposing heavy fines on passengers found violating the rules. Under the provisions of the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026, a minimum fine of Rs 10,000 has been fixed for bringing or delivering offensive or prohibited goods on the railways for transport.
Carrying inflammable and explosive articles on trains is a punishable offense under the Railways Act 1989. The probable causes of fire in trains are due to carrying inflammable goods like stove, gas cylinder, kerosene oil, petrol, fireworks, poll posters, match box, cigarette, etc. in passenger coaches. The Indian Railways has tightened its rules to enhance passenger safety and security.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and regulations while traveling on trains. Passengers are advised to refrain from carrying prohibited items and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
