In a unique initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation, students from all schools in Ranipet district will dedicate at least 20 minutes of their school hours every Monday to nurture trees and plants on their campus, starting from July 27. This program, conceptualized by Collector N. Priya, involves students from government and aided institutions, and is designed to instill the importance of tree care among students.
According to M. Mohana, Chief Educational Officer (CEO), Ranipet, students from classes I to XII will participate in activities such as watering trees, removing dry leaves, and learning interesting facts about various tree species from their teachers. The initiative also includes plantation, maintenance of saplings, and other related activities within the school campus.
To encourage active participation, students who show the best involvement in nurturing trees will be honored with ‘Green Badges.’ With around 900 schools in the district, including 136 government high and higher secondary schools and 1,100 private schools, the program has the potential to create a significant impact. An order has been placed to procure 30,000 ‘Green Badges’ to recognize the efforts of best-performing students in the coming weeks. According to Education officials, this initiative will help create environmental awareness and instill a sense of responsibility towards nature among children.
