In the quiet village of Sangaiprou Kabui, located in Imphal West district, a small team of 17 to 20 members, led by Dr. Kamei Beeju, has been working tirelessly to keep their surroundings clean and green. Every Saturday, the team sets out at 4:30 am to sweep village roadsides, clean drainage systems, and public spaces, a routine they have maintained for years, rain or shine.
Their efforts have paid off, as the village has proudly set a benchmark for other localities and villages in the state to keep their surroundings clean and green. The village, with around 120 households, is now one of the cleanest in the Greater Imphal area, thanks to the dedication and hard work of Dr. Beeju and her team.
Dr. Beeju, the founder of the Green Club, Sangaiprou, shared that the inspiration for her initiative draws from her mother, who ensured that their surroundings were always neat and clean. Motivated by her mother’s dedication, Dr. Beeju launched the initiative to keep the village clean and green and promote grassroots environmental conservation.
As part of their environmental awareness campaign, Dr. Beeju and her team encourage residents to maintain hygienic surroundings and take pride in a cleaner, healthier community. The initiative has created a lasting impact not only on the village community but also resonated in other parts of the state.
Dr. Beeju’s selfless work for the community and her efforts to promote an eco-friendly environment have been recognized, and she was recently presented with the Appreciation Award 2026 on World Environment Day by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur, as an Inspiring Campaigner.
Despite facing environmental challenges, including rising pollution and drought caused by climate change, Dr. Beeju and her team remain committed to their cause. They organize plantation drives, conduct awareness campaigns, and motivate children to nurture lifelong responsibility. The team also manages their expenses by selling the waste plastic they collect to buy equipment and tools, with plastic waste management being a key component of their initiative.
Volunteers from the club shared that participation from both children and elders collectively contributes to keeping the village surroundings clean and fostering environmental consciousness. They believe that even small contributions from every individual can make a huge impact, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed, with passers-by often complimenting their village’s efforts.
