Mizoram Congress Opposes FCRA Amendment Bill

The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the Mizoram government to take the lead in opposing the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, citing its potential adverse impact on Christian organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state.

The party has expressed its commitment to protecting the interests of Mizoram, its people, and the Christian faith, and has called on the state government to act without delay. Addressing a press conference, the Congress party submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Lalduhoma on July 23, seeking three immediate steps to be taken by the government.

The party has urged the Chief Minister to lead a delegation comprising church leaders, NGO representatives, and leaders of all political parties to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and press for the withdrawal of the proposed Bill. Additionally, the party has demanded that Mizoram’s Members of Parliament speak against the legislation in Parliament and vote against it if it is tabled.

The Congress party has also called on the state government to convene a special session of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly to adopt a resolution opposing the proposed amendments. The party expressed disappointment that the state government had not responded despite churches holding joint prayer meetings over the issue, and questioned why the government had remained silent.

The issue was raised again during the party’s weekly Political Session at Congress Bhavan, where former MLA and MPCC Vice-President John Siamkunga reiterated the party’s opposition to the Bill. Siamkunga accused both the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) of failing to speak out against the proposed amendments, and urged Mizoram’s MPs to place their opposition to the Bill on record in Parliament and vote against it if it comes up for consideration.

Reaffirming the Congress’ stand, Siamkunga said the party would continue to oppose any measure it believed was detrimental to the interests of Mizoram, its people, and the Christian community, regardless of the position taken by other political parties.
