The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 47 and over 7.21 lakh people affected across 11 districts. The affected districts include Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai, and Kamrup (Metro).
Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with 3,92,195 people affected by the floods, followed by Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Dibrugarh. According to an official, the situation in Sivasagar is critical, with people facing immense problems, including drinking water shortages, despite the district administration providing relief to flood victims.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that an inter-ministerial central team will soon visit the state to assess the extent of the damage and help determine the Central assistance required for rebuilding livelihoods. The team’s visit comes after a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who expressed support for the state in view of the unprecedented flood situation.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that 6,43,350 people in 35 revenue circles and 889 villages across the affected districts remain affected by the floods. A total of 103 relief camps are sheltering 24,124 displaced people, while 255 relief distribution centres are operational, and around 25,375 hectares of cropland remain inundated.
Several rivers continue to flow above the danger level, raising concerns of further deterioration in the flood situation. The NDRF, SDRF, Army, and Air Force are carrying out rescue operations in the flood-affected areas, with Assam Cabinet ministers Bimal Borah and Susanta Borgohain assisting in the efforts.
The situation in Janzimukh village in Dibrugarh, where 99 families have been affected, mirrors the larger emergency across the district. Residents like Nilima Tayeng are living in fear and anxiety, with the Burhidihing River overflowing due to heavy rainfall in parts of Arunachal Pradesh. The village has received relief materials, but they are insufficient, prompting calls for more government support.
