Heavy rainfall in Nagaland’s Wokha district has caused significant damage to the primary road connecting Zero Point in Bhandari town to several villages, including Bhandari, Alikhum, Longchum, and Yimpang. The relentless downpour from July 18 to 20 resulted in severe damage to the road, disrupting connectivity to these villages.
According to the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the road suffered from sinking and caving in at multiple points. A section of the road, approximately 2-3 kilometers from Zero Point towards Yimpang village, was particularly affected, causing major disruptions to travel in the area.
In response to the crisis, local residents and volunteers have come together to repair the damaged road and clear blocked sections. Rikhyothung Odyuo, vice president of the Lotha Youth Hoho, reported that residents of Bhandari village and surrounding areas have mobilized to restore access to the affected villages.
The heavy rainfall also triggered landslides in the area, resulting in damage to several houses. In Ward 8 of Bhandari town, the houses of Penthungo Yanthan and Helen Yanthan were severely affected, while the house of B. Zuben Yanthan in Yimpang village also sustained extensive damage due to a landslide.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of the heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides.
