The Papum Pare Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Karsingsa recently organized a programme to celebrate the National Fish Farmers’ Day on July 10. The event drew participation from over 24 farmers from various areas, including Naharlagun, Doimukh, Leporiang, Kheel, Kanebung, Inderjuli, Laptap, Balapu, Karsingsa, Bogoli, Chimpu, Toru, Balijan, and Sagalee. Dr Bangkeng Perme, Head of KVK, addressed the gathering, encouraging fish farmers to adopt improved fish varieties for better production and maximum economic gain.
He also briefed them on the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampata Yojana, a government initiative aimed at promoting the fisheries sector. Additionally, Perme motivated the farmers to utilize the Kisan Sarathi app, which enables them to directly contact experts related to agricultural issues. As part of the celebrations, the KVK conducted a training programme on ‘composite fish culture’ and distributed 12 quintals of lime to the participating farmers.
Dr Vivekanand Safi, a fishery expert, highlighted the significance of improved fish varieties such as Amrit catla, Jayanti rohu, and Amur carp in boosting the state’s overall fish production. Dr Safi interacted with the farmers, sharing valuable insights on the application of lime to regulate the pH level of fish ponds, the proper method of releasing fingerling into the pond, and the standard stocking density of fingerling in the pond. He advised the farmers to stock high-quality fish seed in their ponds to achieve better production.
