Maharashtra Rain: 3 Dead, 4 Injured

Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra has claimed three lives and injured four others, disrupting normal life across Mumbai, Thane, and several other districts. The torrential rain lashed the state on Sunday, July 5, 2026, causing widespread damage and affecting flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for about an hour due to strong winds and heavy rain. Authorities have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and Thane in view of the IMD’s rain alert for Monday, July 6, 2026.

Several rain-related incidents were reported from different parts of the state, including the death of 63-year-old Yunus Kundawala, who died after a tree fell on him in Mumbai. A teenager also drowned in a swollen river at Thane, while one person was killed and four others were injured in Satara in rain-related incidents. In Raigad district, which was on a red alert, over 12 tourists were safely rescued from Adoshi waterfall near Khopoli with the help of the local police after the water level rose sharply following heavy rain.

A massive landslide on the road leading to Rajmachi Fort completely blocked vehicular movement in Lonavala, with earth movers deployed to clear the debris. In Mumbai, heavy spells of rain caused multiple trees to fall across the western suburbs, blocking several key roads. Mumbai city recorded 265.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 4 p.m. on Sunday, the highest in the state for the day.

The city was on a red alert on Sunday, with the Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell receiving 93 complaints during the last 24 hours, including 24 instances of tree falls, 22 cases of fallen branches, 24 instances of waterlogging, eight compound wall collapses, and one landslide. Several low-lying areas in Thane city, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli, and Navi Mumbai were flooded, with water entering homes in many of these areas. The administration has issued a warning asking people to stay indoors in districts which are on orange and red alert on Monday.
