On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally, the Janata Dal‑United, accused the Congress of undermining constitutional institutions and creating disorder in an attempt to regain power.
In a joint press conference at the BJP headquarters, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh of the JD(U) spoke alongside senior BJP leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Both ministers condemned the alleged mistreatment of a pregnant journalist who covered a Congress‑led protest on Monday, October 11, 2026.
Goyal warned that if the Congress truly doubted the impartiality of the Election Commission of India and the Special Intensive Revision process, the six chief ministers of states where the party was in power or part of the ruling coalition should resign immediately. He named Karnataka, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu.
The JD(U) minister accused the opposition of double standards, noting that Congress had questioned the ECI’s impartiality while rewarding former election officials with political appointments. He also highlighted that the Modi government had introduced a 2023 law creating a selection committee that includes the Leader of the Opposition to appoint Election Commissioners. Singh further alleged that Congress sought to discredit institutions and pressure them through protests, and compared Rahul Gandhi’s tactics to those of his grandmother during the 1974‑75 Emergency.
