Singer Amritprava Mahanta, accused in the death case of singer‑songwriter Zubeen Garg, was released on bail from the Haflong sub‑jail in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Tuesday. Her family welcomed her as she stepped out. The Gauhati High Court had granted her bail on October 9, setting a bond of Rs 50,000 and requiring two sureties of the same amount.
Mahanta was arrested in October last year in connection with Garg’s death. She was lodged in the Haflong sub‑jail together with fellow accused Shekhar Jyoti Goswami; the remaining defendants are held at Tamulpur jail. The case involves seven accused, including NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, cousin and former Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg, and two personal security officers.
Garg, a celebrated singer‑songwriter, died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in Singapore on 19 September last year. The country’s police concluded there was no evidence of foul play, and a Singapore Coroner’s Court ruled that the singer was severely intoxicated and drowned after refusing a life jacket near Lazarus Island. Assam authorities say the findings will not affect the domestic investigation.
A Special Investigation Team under the CID has probed the case after more than 60 FIRs were filed across the state. The team filed a chargesheet in December naming the seven accused, four of whom face murder charges. The case is being heard by an exclusive fast‑track sessions court in Assam, while two of the accused have already been granted bail in a separate disproportionate assets case.
