Manipur’s senior scribe Bijoy Kakchingtabam nominated as member of PCI

Bijoy Kakchingtabam, a senior journalist from Manipur and associate editor of Poknapham, has been nominated as a member of the Press Council of India (PCI). The nomination marks the second time a journalist from the state has been selected to represent the national media watchdog.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting nominated Kakchingtabam under the “Working Journalists – Other than Editors” category, as per notification S.O. 5494(E) issued on Wednesday. He is the only journalist from Manipur among the 13 working journalists chosen for the apex press regulatory body.

Kakchingtabam previously served as president of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), the state’s leading media organization. His experience spans editorial work and leadership within the regional journalism community.

AMWJU president Asem Bhakta Singh praised the nomination as a historic moment for Manipur, noting that it follows the earlier selection of Dr Khaidem Athouba Meitei as the state’s first PCI nominee. Singh emphasized the need for a strong, independent voice for Manipur and the Northeast at the national level and expressed confidence that Kakchingtabam will represent the media fraternity of the region.
