Nayara Energy, a private fuel retailer, raised petrol prices by Rs 5 per litre and diesel by Rs 3 per litre across its network of more than 7,000 stations, effective Saturday. The move follows a continued rise in global crude oil and fuel product prices that has squeezed retail margins, industry sources said.
This is the second price adjustment by Nayara this year. In March the company increased fuel prices by similar amounts after supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia, but it rolled back the hike in July when crude prices eased. The latest revision is an attempt to narrow the gap between retail fuel prices and higher procurement costs amid a sustained increase in international energy prices.
State‑owned oil marketing companies, which account for over 90 % of India’s 104,000 petrol pumps, have largely kept retail prices stable despite fluctuations in global crude markets. Earlier this week the government warned private retailers not to restrict sales of petrol and diesel. Meanwhile, state‑owned firms raised commercial LPG rates by Rs 62.50 per 19‑kg cylinder, effective from October, while domestic LPG prices remained unchanged at Rs 942. Aviation turbine fuel prices also increased by Rs 16 per litre, bringing domestic airline ATF to Rs 137 per litre.
Commercial LPG prices have seen frequent changes: a Rs 9.50 increase in September followed by cuts of Rs 192 in August and Rs 183.50 in July. Between February and June, rates rose by Rs 1,373 per 19‑kg cylinder, from Rs 1,740.50 to Rs 3,113.50, before falling again in July and August, industry analysts noted.
