Abu Dhabi, Oct 3 – The Indian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates said on Saturday that Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who defended flydubai flight FZ1073 from a mid‑air attack, is responding well to treatment and remains under excellent medical care. The embassy is coordinating with his family and local authorities and thanked the UAE government for the care extended to him.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a fellow pilot on the flight from Dubai to Israel stabbed Captain Machchhar, causing the aircraft to begin a rapid descent. The pilot fought the assailant, opened the cockpit door, and passengers rushed in to subdue the attacker. Captain Machchhar was seriously wounded but was stabilized until the plane made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the captain by video call on Friday, praising his courage, presence of mind and composure. Modi said the nation was praying for his speedy recovery and highlighted that Indians are known for risking their lives to save others.
The captain has received worldwide recognition for his bravery, with leaders and citizens lauding his actions that helped save hundreds of lives. The Indian mission on X reiterated its support for a swift recovery and joined well‑wishers in praying for his good health.
