Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday that the Bharatiya Janata Party will “go” this time and that the opposition need not wait until the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. She urged the INDIA bloc to unite and fight together, declaring that the political game has begun.
Her remarks followed a three‑and‑a‑half‑hour meeting in Delhi where opposition parties finalized a joint action plan to challenge the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls, launch nationwide ‘Save Democracy’ programmes, march to the Commission’s office on October 6 and seek a meeting with the president.
Banerjee said the opposition should first tackle the functioning of the Election Commission, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whom she accused of undermining democracy, and calling for reforms to the election system. She stressed that the parties must work together to win by‑polls through the Commission.
She added that decisions on the opposition’s future would be collective, that the TMC would stay within the INDIA alliance, and that leadership could not rest on a single figure. Banerjee said the opposition was not afraid to mobilise against the Commission and that the movement would continue as a united family.
