Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Member of Parliament from Manipur, with immediate effect after an inquiry into sexual‑harassment allegations made by at least eleven female students.
Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, had previously served as a professor at JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences before entering active politics.
The dismissal order, signed by JNU Vice‑Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, was based on findings from the university’s Internal Committee. The committee conducted an inquiry, examined the available facts, and recommended major disciplinary action. After due process and consideration of the committee’s report, the university imposed the punishment of dismissal from service with immediate effect, as stated in the formal order.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Manipur unit has demanded Akoijam’s resignation as a Member of Parliament, arguing that he has lost the moral authority to continue serving the people.
