Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye‑election, saying the result reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and the people’s confidence in his vision for a developed India.
Election Commission data show BJP candidate Devasish Sharma secured 691,804 votes, defeating All India United Democratic Front’s Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal, who received 534,000 votes, by a margin of 157,804. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora finished third with 124,081 votes, trailing Ajmal by 409,919.
Sarma highlighted that Nagaon, traditionally not a BJP stronghold, was won decisively, pushing Congress to a distant third place. He thanked the electorate for what he called a resounding mandate and pledged to intensify the state’s development efforts.
The victory is a political boost for the BJP in Assam, potentially reshaping the state’s electoral dynamics ahead of future contests. Parties will likely scrutinise the result to gauge voter preferences, campaign strategies, and the influence of national leadership on local outcomes. The statement, however, could not be independently verified.
