A strategic seminar between the Army and the Border Security Force was held in Shillong on 30 September. The Army‑BSF Synergy Seminar 2026 was hosted by the 101 Area of the Eastern Command. Senior officers from the BSF’s Meghalaya, Guwahati, Mizoram, Cachar and Tripura Frontiers attended.

The BSF manages the 4,096 km India‑Bangladesh border, of which 856 km lies in Tripura, 443 km in Meghalaya, 318 km in Mizoram and 262 km in Assam. The remaining 2,217 km is overseen by the West Bengal frontiers. The terrain—riverine, forested and hilly—makes fencing difficult. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, about 3,232.2 km, or roughly 78 per cent, is fenced, leaving 174.5 km of water bodies, marshes and dense forest that are hard to secure.

In addition to intensive patrolling, the BSF now employs advanced surveillance equipment to monitor criminal activity and illegal immigration. Although the Army does not directly manage the border, its vital installations along the northeastern states lie close to it, necessitating closer coordination. An official said that regular sharing of intelligence is key to effective border management and that the border has been used in the past by hostile forces to gather intelligence on Indian military assets.

The 101 Area of the Army is responsible for combat logistics and operational maintenance of units along the northern border and is keen to keep movement details confidential. The seminar focused on enhancing operational coordination, strengthening joint synergy, improving information sharing and fostering an integrated approach to effective border management, the Eastern Command posted on X.
