Guwahati, Sep 30 – Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh announced a three‑year action plan to curb the drug problem in the state, while Home Minister K. Sapdanga declared Tlangmawi in Khawzawl district the first drug‑free village in the state.
The plan was unveiled at the Assembly Annexe in Aizaal on Monday, with ministers, senior police officers, government officials, church leaders, NGOs and students in attendance. Sapdanga presented the drug‑free village certificate to representatives of Tlangmawi.
Governor Singh stressed that the initiative requires a joint effort from government agencies, communities and civil society. He said the state’s strategic location and long international border make it a key gatekeeper for the country and called for continued vigilance against drug trafficking. Singh praised the Young Mizo Association’s year theme “Ruihhlo Do” (War on Drugs) and highlighted the cross‑border anti‑drug Operation Jericho and the Hulhliap Short Stay Centre, a short‑term detoxification and rehabilitation programme.
According to the home minister, 635 cases were registered under the ND&PS Act between January and August, resulting in 930 arrests, including 111 foreigners. He urged intensified awareness programmes in schools and stronger border operations to stop drug inflow. Sapdanga lauded the unity and determination of Tlangmawi residents, saying their success should inspire other villages across the state.
