The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) vigilance committee has urged the Department of Power Nagaland (DoPN) to maintain the existing electricity tariff in Dimapur, citing the region’s hot and humid climate and the heavy reliance of residents on electrical appliances.
In a formal letter addressed to the chief engineer of distribution and revenue, sent through the executive engineer (electrical) in Dimapur, committee convener Sejongmong and secretary Vekho Vero noted that several electrical appliances had become essential for people across all sections of society because of local climatic conditions.
The committee argued that Nagaland’s revised tariff is comparatively high when benchmarked against neighbouring states. For example, Delhi charges Rs 3 per kWh for the first 200 kWh and Rs 4.50 for 201–400 kWh, while Assam rates Rs 4.25 for the first 120 kWh and Rs 6.50 for 121–240 kWh. By contrast, Nagaland’s slabs are Rs 5.70 for 0–30 kWh, Rs 6.00 for 31–100 kWh and Rs 7.33 for 101–250 kWh.
Given the additional financial strain on consumers, the vigilance committee has called on the department to act swiftly and revert to the existing tariff structure in Dimapur.
