The Mizoram government began issuing land passes for 1,217 residential plots in Chekbawk, a southern suburb of Aizawl, on Monday. Revenue Minister B Lalchhanzova handed out the documents to 319 landowners in the first phase of the distribution.
Lalchhanzova said the 1,217 plots had been identified and finalized after a comprehensive re‑survey and verification of the area. He urged residents not to politicize the land‑settlement process and explained that the government was still addressing long‑standing issues, including pending matters at Aizawl’s Ramhlun Sports Complex and Zemabawk High School Veng areas, with further announcements expected later that week.
Planning for Chekbawk began in 1997 with a house‑site plan for 305 plots. Subsequent extension and revised plans were drawn up in 2002 and 2009, but disputes over earlier plans prompted a full re‑survey from 5 October 2021 to 30 September 2022. The revised plan covers 1,076,508.841 square metres (107.651 hectares), provides for 1,369 plots—1,352 private and 17 public—along with 13.90 km of internal roads and designated areas for public facilities, green spaces, cemeteries, markets and schools.
New Land Settlement Certificates were issued in 2023‑24, but the process was halted after objections. A fact‑finding committee was formed, and further ground verification was ordered. Following the Revenue Department’s verification and a subsequent government report, the freeze on issuance was lifted, clearing 1,217 plots for land passes that will now be distributed in phases.
