Manipur to Host First ISL Match on Nov 24

Manipur will host an Indian Super League match for the first time on November 24, the state government announced during World Tourism Day celebrations in Bishnupur district. The event will feature NorthEast United FC, which the government says will help position the state as a tourism destination and boost its economy.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh jointly attended the programme at Sangai Ethnic Park in Moirang Khunou. The theme of this year’s event was “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.” Bhalla highlighted that Manipur’s tourism potential extends beyond its landscapes, emphasizing the role of local communities and their traditions, and announced promotion of homestays to involve families directly in the tourism sector.

Khemchand noted that Manipur received about 175,000 tourists annually before the 2023 crisis, contrasting this with Mizoram’s eight lakh and Sikkim’s 17 lakh visitors. He blamed the decline on law‑and‑order concerns, stressing that peace is essential for tourism revival. He also warned that beautification alone would not suffice and called for better itineraries and facilities that meet international standards.

Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh said tourism could generate significant revenue, while urging unity among the state’s 36 communities for peace and development. The programme also saw the launch of the Manipur Tech Innovation Foundation portal and a revamped Explore Manipur tourism portal.

The governor presented awards to Re‑Imagining Manipur Hackathon winners, and the chief minister honored participants of a bike rally. MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh urged a community‑centred tourism model and greater opportunities for young entrepreneurs.

Attendees included Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, other MLAs, senior officials, police and local residents.
