India secured a decisive victory in the Asian Games women’s cricket opener, defeating Japan by eight wickets to advance to the semifinals. The match, held in Nisshin, saw India bowl out Japan for a modest 57 runs in 19.5 overs, before chasing the target in just five overs.
India’s bowlers dominated from the outset. Left‑arm spinner Shree Charani claimed four wickets for ten runs, while Shafali Verma added two wickets for thirteen runs. The pair shared six of the ten wickets, and the Indian spinners maintained tight pressure, limiting Japan to only three boundaries and a single run‑out.
On the batting side, Shafali Verma led the chase with a blistering 40 not out off 15 balls, and Richa Ghosh contributed 12 runs in six balls. India reached 59 for two in five overs, setting up a semifinal clash with Bangladesh on September 20.
The pitch offered pronounced turn and bounce, favoring the Indian bowlers and making it difficult for the Japanese batters to play freely. Japanese top scorer Ayaka Kato‑Stafford was dismissed for 25, and the team suffered two run‑outs, further hampering their efforts. Despite moments of spirited play, Japan could not overcome India’s class and skill in this match.
