Forest officials rescued a juvenile Royal Bengal Tiger from Notungaon, a village near Biswanath Ghat on the fringe of the 6th Addition to Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve under Biswanath Wildlife Division on Thursday evening.
The tiger was first noticed in the bushes within the village habitation during the morning hours. Immediately upon receiving information, the forest department, in coordination with the civil administration and police, secured and cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of residents and the animal.
Considering the possibility that the juvenile tiger might have strayed away from its mother, the animal was kept under close observation for several hours to allow sufficient opportunity for the mother to return and reclaim it. However, despite prolonged monitoring, no indication of the presence of another tiger was observed until the evening. As the likelihood of a natural reunion at the location diminished, a carefully planned rescue operation was undertaken. Nets were strategically placed to guide the juvenile tiger towards a trap cage. After a prolonged wait, the tiger entered the cage and was safely secured. The rescue was accomplished without the use of chemical immobilisation considering the young age of the animal. Following the rescue, the tiger was placed under observation and is receiving necessary veterinary care.
The officials informed that reunion attempts would again be undertaken with the objective of returning the juvenile to its natural habitat and, if feasible, facilitating its reunion with its mother.
