A two‑day Specialized Training for Mathematics and Science Teachers under the Learning Enhancement Programme (LEP) began at SIEMAT SCERT in Kohima on September 15, targeting teachers from PM SHRI School Nagaland. The Department of School Education organized the event, which is part of a broader effort to improve learning outcomes in the state.
During the opening session, Dr. Kevizakie Rio, Joint Mission Director of Samagra Nagaland, praised PM SHRI School Nagaland for its exemplary performance, noting that its results are directly monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office. He cautioned teachers to remain sincere in their duties, citing the National Achievement Survey’s finding that Nagaland records the poorest scores in mathematics and science. Dr. Rio attributed these low results to students’ fear of the subjects, which leads to neglect and poor performance.
The training aims to identify class IX and X mathematics and science teachers who can address subject‑specific learning gaps. It will also target students identified through academic assessments and board examination results. Focus areas include foundational and conceptual gaps, core concept reinforcement, remedial strategies, learner‑centred and activity‑based teaching, development of supplementary resources, and enhancement of problem‑solving and analytical skills for Class X board preparation.
Dr. Prochete Mallik, co‑founder and principal scientist at ThinkTac, highlighted the organisation’s work with schools in the North East and North Bengal. He emphasized the importance of hands‑on activities from a young age to foster creativity and innovation, and noted that the two‑day program will cover 24 science topics and 10 mathematics topics through practical sessions, formal instruction and teacher presentations.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Bijano Murry, joint mission director for Samagra Shiksha & SNO PM SHRI Nagaland, who delivered the welcome address. Resource persons included Dr. Mallik, Gopinath, Kakoli and Priyanshu from ThinkTac. A total of 48 government teachers from 21 PM SHRI schools across Nagaland attended the training.
