Guwahati, Sept. 14 – Police said the murder suspect Ramanuj Goswami died from injuries sustained after jumping from a police vehicle in the early hours while en route to a medical check‑up at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
The suspect, 28, had been in a seven‑day police remand after being arrested for the murder of his wife. He complained of feeling uneasy and was taken from Hatigaon police station to GMCH via Kahilipara at about 2 a.m. During the drive, a tyre puncture near the TV tower at Narakasur Hills forced the vehicle to stop.
When the vehicle stopped, Goswami, handcuffed, kicked the constables in the rear seat and jumped out. He fell onto the road, sustaining multiple injuries, and later attempted another jump down a slope, suffering severe head injuries. He was taken to GMCH where doctors declared him dead.
Earlier in September, Goswami was arrested at Hatigaon Police after he surrendered and confessed to killing his 25‑year‑old wife, Riya Talukdar, in their Basisthapur apartment. Her dismembered body was found on the third floor, with her severed head recovered from a refrigerator. Police said medical checks were conducted every 24 hours during custody, and that a post‑mortem has been performed while legal formalities continue.
