Around a dozen students at Upgraded Middle School in Vasudeva, Saharsa district, Bihar, fell ill after eating the mid‑day meal on Saturday, according to local authorities. The affected children were transported to the Bariyahi Primary Health Centre where they are receiving treatment.
The incident prompted an immediate response from school officials, parents and villagers who gathered at the school to check on the students’ condition. Health officials and the local administration launched an inquiry into the cause of the illness, and the Education Department has collected food samples for laboratory testing.
An education department official noted that the school’s meals are supplied by an NGO. While some students reported feeling unwell shortly after eating, an unverified claim that a chameleon was found in the meal has emerged. Officials said that confirmation will come only after the food samples and other evidence are examined.
The Health Department has deployed a monitoring team, and the health of other students is being closely watched so that medical assistance can be provided promptly if additional symptoms appear. The investigation and testing process is expected to clarify the exact cause of the students’ illness.
