Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday that a strong chargesheet will be filed within two weeks in the murder case of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh. He confirmed that he has spoken with Delhi Police officials and that the investigation will proceed swiftly.
The incident occurred outside Singh’s apartment in Delhi when a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff allegedly assaulted him after he asked them to reduce the noise. The musician died as a result of the attack, a tragedy that the minister described as “very tragic”.
All eight accused were arrested by the Delhi Police, who also met with Singh’s family. Arrangements have been made to transport the musician’s mortal remains back to Manipur tomorrow, according to Rijiju.
Investigators found that the accused work at a dhaba and as delivery workers, and that they come from different states and communities. The dispute broke out at night over music and noise, the minister said.
Rijiju criticised Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for a post on X that portrayed the incident as a targeted killing. He emphasised that all citizens, including those from the North East, are Indian and that the case should not be politicised.
The minister praised the police for their prompt action, noting that the accused fled but were apprehended quickly. He urged strict punishment to deter future incidents and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
