National Highway 62, formerly designated NH‑217, traverses the South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. The road has become a focal point of local concern as community groups and non‑governmental organisations assess its impact on the area.
A coalition of NGOs—including GSU, FKJGP, AHAM, ADE, APA, AYWO and NGCO—met with the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills to discuss their grievances. The meeting centred on the perceived disruptions linked to the highway’s construction and operation.
The NGOs announced a Non‑Cooperation Movement (NCM) scheduled for 2 September and 3 September, each day from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. The movement is directed specifically at NH‑62 (formerly NH‑217) and seeks to highlight the groups’ objections to the highway’s presence in the district.
In a statement the NGOs said, “On 2 September and 3 September, from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., we will observe the Non‑Cooperation Movement (NCM) targeting the highway.” The declaration underscores the coordinated effort by the organisations to draw attention to the issue during the specified period.
