Four athletes from Nagaland have been selected to represent India at the 20th Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Japan from September 19 to October 4. The contingent comprises Sepak Takraw players Menenu Tsukru and Seyiekhrieno Tepa, along with coaches Puleno Neikha and Pungotolu Puro.
A send-off programme was held at the Nagaland Cricket Association office in Dimapur, attended by Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio. Rio congratulated the athletes and coaches, stating that their achievement was a matter of pride for Nagaland. He emphasized the importance of hard work, talent, and dedication, urging the athletes to uphold the values of discipline, dedication, and determination both on and off the field.
Rio also highlighted the potential of Nagaland to produce athletes capable of reaching the Olympics, provided they receive adequate opportunities and support. He noted that the state has produced three Olympians in the past, including legendary footballer Dr. T. Ao, archer Chekrovolu Swuro, and Paralympic medallist Hotoshe Sema.
The Chief Minister expressed optimism about the state’s sporting future, citing the government’s efforts to develop infrastructure and encourage athletes at the grassroots level. He emphasized that sporting achievements carry a responsibility, as success at the national and international level can inspire younger generations.
Earlier, Secretary General of the Nagaland Olympic Association Abu Metha delivered opening remarks, highlighting the achievements of Nagas in Sepak Takraw and their consistent medal wins at national and international competitions. Metha also informed that Paralympic medallist Hotoshe Sema would be representing India at the Asian Games.
Coach Puleno Neikha stated that preparations for the Asian Games were underway, and the team would be leaving for further training. She expressed her commitment to giving her best as a coach and helping the athletes deliver their best performance. Player Menenu Tsukru also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nagaland and India, vowing to give her best and try to win a medal.
