Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formally approved Bongaigaon Medical College, allowing the institution to admit 100 MBBS students. This approval marks a significant milestone in Assam’s efforts to expand medical education and strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
With the approval, Bongaigaon Medical College has become Assam’s 15th medical college, increasing the total number of MBBS seats in the state to 1,925. The Chief Minister described the development as a proud moment for Assam, noting that the expansion of medical education would create greater opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medicine within the state.
The new medical college is expected to further contribute to Assam’s growing medical education ecosystem and support the state government’s efforts to develop Assam as a major hub for medical education. The addition of 100 MBBS seats at Bongaigaon Medical College is expected to give students from Assam and the wider Northeast more opportunities to pursue medical education closer to home.
The Chief Minister thanked Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda for his continued support and for approving the medical college. The development comes amid the state government’s continued focus on expanding medical and healthcare facilities across Assam, including increasing access to medical education and trained healthcare professionals.
Sarma has frequently highlighted the expansion of medical colleges and MBBS seats as a key component of his government’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen human resources in the medical sector. With 15 medical colleges and 1,925 MBBS seats, Assam has significantly expanded its medical education capacity in recent years.
The latest approval is expected to further strengthen the state’s journey towards becoming a major centre for medical education in the country.
