Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi, Manipur’s 2026 Commonwealth Games medalists, received a hero’s welcome upon their arrival at Imphal Airport on Monday. Rishikanta, who won the silver medal in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event, and Bindyarani, who secured bronze in the women’s 58 kg category, were greeted with warm applause and cheers from state officials, family, friends, and students from the National Sports Academy (NSA).
The two weightlifters were welcomed by MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, members of the All Manipur Weightlifting Association, and Naorem Praveen Singh, Secretary cum Commissioner of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS). The reception was a testament to the pride and admiration that the people of Manipur have for their athletes.
Speaking to the media, Rishikanta expressed his delight at winning the silver medal, saying it was a dream come true. He credited his success to the hard work and efforts he put in at the National Sports Academy. Rishikanta also vowed to train harder to improve his performances in future events.
Bindyarani Devi thanked her family, friends, and well-wishers for the warm reception and urged the people of the state to continue supporting her. She also acknowledged the contributions of her parents, coaches, and supporters to her international achievement.
Naorem Praveen Singh praised the two medallists for their remarkable performances, saying their achievements underscored the significance of determination and perseverance in overcoming challenges. He also highlighted the impressive showing of women from the state at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, noting that they have played prominent roles across various fields and continue to excel in sports.
Secretary cum Commissioner Praveen also announced that weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and boxer M Jadumani Singh have been confirmed for participation in the upcoming Asian Games.
