Rahul Gandhi: Students Need Apology, Not PM's Forgiveness

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi stated that students protesting across the country are in severe pain over unemployment and the state of the education system. He emphasized that they do not need Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forgiveness but an apology for his government’s actions against them.

Mr. Gandhi made these remarks at the launch of a book on former MP and MDMK chief Vaiko. He pointed out that students have taken to the streets demanding fairness in examinations and a functioning education system. He questioned the Prime Minister’s authority to forgive the students, stating that they deserve an apology instead.

The student protests, according to Mr. Gandhi, are linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) attempt to impose a single historical narrative on the country. He cited the Constitution’s description of India as a Union of States, highlighting that every State embodies the history, traditions, language, and aspirations of its people.

Mr. Gandhi alleged that the RSS believes only the history ascribed by it matters, which is why the students are out on the streets. He emphasized that India will not tolerate its history being trampled upon by anybody. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu Education Minister A. Rajmohan.

Mr. Gandhi described Mr. Vaiko as an inspiration for all and thanked the veteran leader for his service to the country. He stated that it was an honour to participate in the launch of his book.
