President Donald Trump addressed a crowd of his most loyal MAGA supporters in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday as Republicans intensify campaigning ahead of the midterm elections. The 80‑year‑old former president appeared at the F&M Bank Arena to “supercharge” his base, telling the audience that he could “say the stupidest things” and still receive applause.
During the rally, Trump questioned why he was campaigning in Tennessee, noting that he had “won your state by many, many, many points” in previous elections. He remarked that he had been “screwed the second time because they cheated” and urged that such a situation not happen again. The president then described a friend with stage fright, explaining that for him it is easy to speak in front of thousands because of the “love in these rooms.”
The crowd responded with chants of “Trump, Trump, Trump!” and cheers of “We love you!” Trump emphasized that while he could say absurd things, he instead speaks of “common sense,” citing goals such as a border, low taxes, and a strong military. He concluded by welcoming Republicans on the ballot to the stage and urged attendees to vote for them, repeating his plea that he is “on the ballot – just pretend I’m on the ballot.”
Although Trump himself is not on the ballot for Election Day, a recent Politico poll found that 26% of 2024 Trump voters believe GOP candidates in their district have a better chance if they break with the president, while 62% think aligning with Trump improves their odds. The rally underscored the president’s continued influence among his core supporters as the midterms approach.
