13-year-old charged with murder after man stabbed in Sydney's west

On Friday evening, emergency services responded to Mount Druitt after reports of an assault. Police found a 36‑year‑old man with stab wounds to the torso. Paramedics attempted to revive him, but he died at the scene.

The following Sunday, a 13‑year‑old boy was arrested at Mount Druitt police station and charged with murder, breach of bail and an unrelated robbery offence. Police said the boy was known to them and was identified on CCTV footage from the incident. A 16‑year‑old was also arrested later that evening in Cabramatta on a charge of accessory after the fact to murder.

Superintendent Darrin Batchelor described the case as “absolutely senseless” and said initial investigations suggested the altercation began as an innocent encounter. He explained that the victim had stopped to speak with friends before withdrawing money at an ATM so the young people could return home. According to Batchelor, a second group took offence to that conversation and allegedly stabbed the victim twice.

Police urged anyone with CCTV or dash‑cam footage to come forward. Detective Brendan Gorman said investigators were looking into the case and had identified about a dozen people in the area at the time. A knife used in the stabbing was recovered from a drain outside a unit block in Cabramatta. Both boys were denied bail and were scheduled to appear before a children’s court on Monday.
