The House Committee of the Lok Sabha, responsible for overseeing accommodation and amenities at the official residences of members, has not been reconstituted despite the term of the previous panel ending on July 3, over a month ago. In the interim, the Lok Sabha secretariat has taken over the functions of the House Committee. This arrangement was put in place last year when the Speaker authorized the Secretary General to make administrative decisions on July 14.
The House Committee plays a crucial role in advising on the allotment of government residences to Lok Sabha members in Delhi, recommending policies for accommodation allocation, and examining maintenance and management issues to ensure residences meet members’ requirements. The committee also monitors residential amenities provided to Members of Parliament, including water supply, electricity, sanitation, security, housekeeping, and other civic services. The previous House Committee was headed by BJP MP Mahesh Sharma and included senior members such as Congress Chief Whip Kodikunnil Suresh and Trinamool Congress’s Kalyan Banerjee, among others.
